This is an in-depth look at Shiatsu and High Blood Pressure by using one case study as an example. Kensen Saito, owner and Director of the Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo, instructs the public and therapists how to deal with HBP. “The focus of treating high blood pressure with shiatsu is the kind of effectiveness that is received from a treatment. Our goal should be to create homeostasis with the autonomic nervous system, to make it balanced. Particularly, the autonomic nervous system affects the circulatory system so shiatsu creates a better flow.” A detailed chart reveals the numerous effects of high blood pressure on the body including primary and secondary causes of hypertension and how stress plays a role.

Tokujiro Namikoshi 1905–2000, Massage Magazine, March/April 2001
A tribute to the late founder of shiatsu, Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905-2000) was published in the Massage magazine shortly after his death. Briefly, it describes the development of shiatsu initiated by the then seven-year-old Tokujiro Namikoshi. He was influential in healing his mother’s rheumatoid arthritis. Although he had no knowledge of anatomy and physiology at the age of 7, he ‘listened’ to his mother’s body with his hands, and as a result of this receptivity, he sensed differences in skin condition, heat, and stiffness. His talent as a healing facilitator was the basis for the development of shiatsu today. By 1957, the newly named Japan Shiatsu School was officially licensed by the Minister of Health and welfare and was known as the first school of its kind in Japan.
